Not sure if this really does anything other than make you feel pretty tough for slugging it down, but it makes a nice hot drink and a little citrus and turmeric can't hurt, right?
Time 15 minutes
Difficulty Very Easy
Servings 8
Ingredients
1 clove garlic minced finely, use more if you like, but a little goes a long way since it's raw
1/4 cup ginger minced fine
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes take it easy here too, a little goes a long way
1 Tbsp. horseradish ditto on the horseradish, take it easy here
1 Tbsp. turmeric at least this much, feel free to add more
1 teaspoon black peppercorns just a few peppercorns added to the mix
1 orange quartered, not peeled - get a nice big one, or add two
1 lemon quartered, not peeled - again a big good one, or a couple small ones
apple cider vinegar
honey
- Combine garlic, ginger, horseradish, chiles, turmeric and peppercorns. Squeeze in oranges and lemons. Add rinds and stir well. Firmly pack into jar.
- Pour in vinegar until solids are covered, leaving a bit of room at the top of the jar. Seal jar with lid. If the lid is metal and doesn’t have a coating, put parchment paper between the lid and the jar to keep the metal from reacting with the vinegar.
- Let steep for at least 12 hours, pressing down on the solids occasionally. Strain into a smaller jar.
- If you are up to it, take a shot of the elixir straight up in the morning. For a more tasty drink, add a shot to hot water with a spoon or two of honey. Enjoy.
